CCD size and super8

1/2 inch CCD is how many mm? 12.56 mm? is this correct? So a Canon XL1/GL1 should have a shallower DoF when compared to any S8 cam. Is this correct? If I am not mistaken a 1/3 CCD cam should have about the equivalent DoF to S8 cam if aperture and focal point is the same.

Yes that is about right. The larger the format, the shallower the depth of field. However, because both a 1/3 and 1/2 inch chip is soooooo small, you might not actually see such a difference on display, even though it would be so in reality. This is because the normal lens for both is still a VERY short focal length. Anything below about 20mm is going to have a ton of depth of field and you would really have to work hard to get something out of focus (which amazes me even more considering how many 8mm home movies my mom shot out of focus!).
